Khaenri’ah was an ancient underground nation that existed without gods or an Archon, relying instead on human technology, alchemy, and machinery. It became extremely advanced, creating powerful constructs like Ruin Guards, but this independence put it in conflict with Celestia. Five hundred years ago, during the Cataclysm, Khaenri’ah was destroyed by divine punishment. Its people were cursed some became immortal, while others turned into Hilichurls. It remains one of the most important mysteries in Teyvat’s history.
Khaenri’ah’s environment is described as an underground, industrial, and highly developed civilization rather than a natural landscape. It was built deep beneath the surface, with vast cities, advanced machinery, and artificial structures replacing traditional nature. After its destruction during the Cataclysm, the environment became corrupted and ruined, leaving behind broken machines, cursed remnants, and traces of Abyssal energy scattered throughout its remains.
Khaenri’ah is significant because it represents humanity existing without gods or Archons, relying entirely on its own knowledge and power. This made it a direct challenge to Celestia’s authority and the divine order of Teyvat. Its destruction during the Cataclysm is one of the most important events in the entire story, shaping the present world and causing widespread suffering, including the creation of Hilichurls and the rise of the Abyss Order.
